Personality.

Appare is a very selfish and straight forward boy. He lives his life doing whatever he finds is fun, even if it's something reckless that could get himself in trouble or hurt someone else. He suffers from horrible tunnel vision and hyperfixations, with his main driving force being a book called "From the Earth To the Moon". Appare is obsessed with the idea of being the first man to the moon, and so his whole life has been spent tinkering with technology and engineering all kinds of things. His tunnel vision is so bad that he doesn't eat or sleep like a normal person would. He only sleeps after staying up as physically long as possible, so he can work as long as possible. Usually resulting in him falling sleep in the weirdest positions, and nearly impossible to wake up. He also has to be given food and reminded to eat otherwise he doesn't. And when he DOES eat, he scarfs it down as physically fast as he can so he can go right back to tinkering.

He'll do anything to make sure he can finish what he's started, too. Even if it means being reckless like breaking and entering a business to steal or get a closer look at something he's inspired by. Or by driving a car so fast and insanely over huge gaps between cliffs to try and win a race.

He also can have a little bit of a temper, as he's spoiled and gets mad when people get in way of his inventions or when people insult technology. He's also VERY passionate when it comes to said inventions, and the moment he's behind the wheel of a car he's created he goes absolutely feral. Screaming and hollering, opposed to his usual quiet and deadpan demeanor.

Despite being an inventor, Appare is also quite dumb. He doesn't understand social cues at all, and he can't do anything outside of engineering/tinkering/inventing. When he tries to do something else, it never goes well. He's used a raw potato as fish bait, for example. And got himself tied up in a tree when he tried to make a trap for hunting. He's only good at what he knows, so he doesn't try anything else.

background.

The year is 1901, and a boy from Japan is obsessed with steamboats and Jules Verne's "From the Earth To the Moon". He's hyperfixated on making a rocket ship, starting by making a steam boat. Said steam boat ends up taking him halfway across the ocean, and eventually he finds himself in Los Angeles after his boat is tugged to shore.

There's a race in America with a large amount of prize money, and in order to win it and get a ship back to Japan, Appare turns his steamboat into a steam/gas hybrid car and enters the race! The whole series is about said race, which is full of death and destruction as cowboys and outlaws rule the land around them.

During the series, a usually deadpan and selfish Appare learns the value of friendship and of feeling his emotions and allowing other people to get close to him.
